We decided to visit Thirlestane Castle and as it turned out we were just in time as it was on the last open day before it closed for the winter period. I had already visited a few years previously with my eldest daughter, who at the time was so spooked that she has refused to return. I must admit I found it quite funny much to her disgust. She had been very much on the fence with regards to the existence of the paranormal so her reaction to the extreme cold air that followed her around was amusing along with clocks chiming every time she entered a room and the voices of the children that she heard. Yes I heard the clocks chime and felt the ice cold air around her, but not the children. Even when we went down to the riverside walk nearby, all the sheep in the field suddenly stopped munching on the grass and watched us as we walked by as though they could see something or someone we couldn’t- it was quite unnerving. Back to the present and on this occasion my wee sister and I did not feel any cold air or hear voices or unusual clock chimes. We started our trail in the little coffee room (naturally) this was housed in an originally part of the castle. It had lovely homely feel, with really pleasant staff they had a fabulous little lunch menu which was very reasonably priced. I had sense that it had been the centre of family or staff gatherings. I also felt a nostalgia for the war years. Wandering around the rest of the castle, this feeling was reinforced with the a historical account of the castle housing soldiers during the great war, the evidence of a long family history was on display with portraits and the usual worldly items of owners long deceased. We underestimated just how much time would be needed to enjoy a day here as the home and surrounding garden areas are beautiful . Another visit is definitely on the cards next year once it reopens for the season -if not for lunch alone !

What a stunning place to visit and photograph Thirlestane Castle is set in such idyllic peaceful scenery. Its always difficult to get pictures from inside main home as some have strict rules around photography which you have to respect. We would love to be invited by any establishment anytime to access any areas and write you up report for free or cup tea and slice cake so just ask
